The cracks are in the ice

It has been twelve months since the last ‘Ice’ enquiry  (Letters Patent dated 28 November 2018 appointed by Professor Dan Howard SC  as Commissioner. And now there is to be a new enquiry.

What is this enquiry for?

In simple terms this enquiry may strengthen NSW’s response to ice and illicit amphetamine type stimulants (‘ATS’), this would include law enforcement, raise awareness of the effect of the drug and look into treatment and rehabilitation in order to eradicate this addiction and industry. What is the best way to get ice off the streets? Is it more effective to educate the addicts or to put bigger penalties on the distributors? The answer is both and this enquiry will tackle both ends of the spectrum concentrating on the nature and impact of crystal methamphetamine or other ATS the sufficiency and effectiveness of the current punishment and measures to target Ice.

What is Ice?

Ice (crystal methamphetamine) is a form of the potent stimulant drug methamphetamine. Also referred to as crystal meth. Ice is the purest and most potent form of methamphetamine. It comes as a powder or crystals that are usually snorted, injected or smoked.

Why is Ice wide spread in Australia?

Reports show that 1 in 70 people in Australia use Ice, and 20.4% of those use it weekly.

The main reason is because it is cheap and produces a great high. Some reports state that it is cheaper than a slab of beer and is a great stress relief for all types of people. Ice is not only used by troubled youths or lower income earners but by business men, doctors and surgeons coping with trauma, or deal with work pressures.
