Drink driving mothers crack down

Assistant Commissioner of NSW Police Michael Corboy has revealed police officers are targeting school pick up and drop off times to catch drink-driving mothers.

The crackdown comes after nine NSW women in the past three months alone were arrested and charged with drink driving with children in the backseat.

“What that indicates to me is that they have complete disregard for what they have been drinking,” Commissioner Corboy told 60 Minutes reporter Allison Langdon.

“Complete disregard for the law and complete disregard for the safety of their children.

“I don’t have any sympathy for these people at all. “

The commissioner also revealed that mothers caught drink driving with their children in the car will be publicised.

“If you do get caught drinking and driving you’ve got kids in the car we will be putting that out there to say, ‘This is an example of what you shouldn’t be doing’ and how dangerous it could be,” he said.

(60 Minutes)Recent research shows nearly one in four Australian women aged between 35 and 59 drink excessively to dangerous levels.

Many blame an increase in stress and pressure on women juggling a home life, work life and social life as a reason for turning to the bottle.

But at their most self-destructive and most terrifying, these intoxicated mothers then climb behind the wheel, endangering themselves, other drivers, and their children.

And Commissioner Corboy is adamant that rather than pity, these women deserve the full extent of the law.

“That to us is extremely dangerous… it is criminal,” he said.

“These are completely avoidable incidents.”
